Upsells & upgrades

Discounted add-ons on the product page and in the portal — plus a one-time → subscription upgrade at checkout.

1. The two levers

Upsells grow the value of orders you're already getting. Sublyra gives you two:

LeverWhere it showsWhat it does
Upsell rulesOn the product page, inside the subscribe widget's "Add to your order" section — and in the customer portal.Offer add-on products at a discount. The shopper clicks Add and the item lands in the cart at the discounted price.
Checkout upgradeAt checkout (and on the thank-you page), as a banner.Offers one-time buyers an upgrade to a subscription on the item they're already buying — accepting swaps the line for the same product on a selling plan.
Plan note: upsells and the checkout upgrade are available on every Sublyra plan, including the free Launch plan. Transaction fees follow your plan — see pricing.

2. Create an upsell rule

1 In the Sublyra admin, go to Settings → Upsells & upgrades.

2 In the Add a rule card, fill in:

FieldWhat it does
Rule nameYour label for the rule — shoppers don't see it.
Discount %0–100. Backed by a real automatic discount at checkout, so the price the widget shows is the price checkout charges.
Where it showsThe rule's scope — every subscription product, or one selling plan group (section 3).
Offer productsClick Choose products and tick the products this offer recommends. At least one is required — a rule with no offer products is rejected on save.

3 Click Create upsell rule. The rule goes live immediately: it appears in the subscribe widget's "Add to your order" section on in-scope product pages and in the customer portal — no theme editor step needed for these surfaces.

What the shopper sees: under the subscription options, an "Add to your order" section with each offer product — image, title, the original price struck through, the discounted price with a "save X%" note, and an Add button. A product never upsells itself, so shoppers never see the item they're already viewing.

3. Rule scopes — where an offer shows

ScopeProduct pageCustomer portal
All subscription products + every renewalShows on every product page that has the subscribe widget.Shown to every subscriber.
One selling plan groupShows only on product pages whose product belongs to the chosen group.Shown only to subscribers of that group.

Use the broad scope for universal add-ons (shaker bottles, samples, gift wrap). Use the group scope when the offer only makes sense next to a specific line — coffee filters for the coffee subscription, not for the whole catalogue.

Group scope needs a group. If you pick One selling plan group but don't choose the group in the Selling plan group dropdown, the rule is rejected on save. Groups come from Subscriptions → Selling plans.

4. Why the prices are always right

Every rule discount is backed by a real automatic discount in Shopify, created and maintained by Sublyra when you save. That's a deliberate design choice:

Permission note: creating the backing discounts needs the write_discounts scope, requested on the install screen. If an amber "Additional permission needed" banner appears at the top of the page, click Grant access, approve on Shopify's screen, and save the rule again.

5. The checkout upgrade offer

The checkout upgrade targets the highest-intent moment of all: a one-time buyer, card in hand. It shows a banner offering to switch their one-time item to a subscription — with a discount on the first subscription order.

1 Go to Settings → Upsells & upgrades and scroll to the Subscription upgrade (checkout) card.

2 Tick Enable the checkout upgrade offer (off = the extension shows nothing).

3 Write the headline (e.g. "Subscribe & save") and the offer text (e.g. "Switch to a subscription and save on every order"), and set the discount % on the first subscription order.

4 Click Save upgrade offer. Saving publishes the configuration to a shop metafield the checkout extension reads — you'll see a confirmation that it was published.

How it behaves at checkout:

6. Placing the checkout block

The upgrade banner renders through a checkout UI extension, which you place in the checkout editor:

1 In Shopify admin, go to Settings → Checkout → Customize (the checkout and accounts editor).

2 Use the page dropdown at the top to pick the page, then click Add app block and choose Sublyra's checkout upgrade block.

3 Save. The banner now renders wherever you placed it, driven by the config from section 5.

Where you can place it depends on your Shopify plan. Blocks on the checkout page itself require Shopify Plus — that's a Shopify platform rule, not a Sublyra limit. The thank-you and order status pages accept checkout blocks on every Shopify plan, so stores without Plus place the block there: the buyer sees the upgrade offer right after paying and can still act on it. Both placements use the same block and the same settings.

7. Toggle and delete

ActionEffect
Deactivate a ruleHides the offer from the product page and the portal, and pauses its backing automatic discount. The setup is kept — reactivate any time.
Delete a ruleRemoves the rule and deletes its automatic discount from Shopify, for good.
Disable the checkout upgradeUntick Enable the checkout upgrade offer and save — the extension renders nothing, and the block can stay placed for later.

8. FAQ

Do upsell add-ons become part of the subscription?

No. An add-on is added to the cart as a one-time item at its discounted price. The subscription in the cart keeps its own items and frequency.

Why doesn't my upsell rule show on a product page?

Check three things: the rule is Active on Settings → Upsells & upgrades; the product is in the rule's scope (broad scope covers everything with the widget, group scope only that group's products); and the Sublyra subscribe widget block is placed on that product template — "Add to your order" renders inside the widget.

Can I offer the same product at different discounts in different rules?

Yes — create two rules with different scopes and discounts. Keep an eye on overlap: if both rules are in scope for the same product, shoppers see both offers. Prefer one rule per context.

The checkout banner doesn't appear. What's wrong?

Work through this list: the upgrade offer is enabled and saved on Settings → Upsells & upgrades; the checkout upgrade block is placed in the checkout editor (checkout page needs Shopify Plus — use the thank-you page on other plans); and the cart contains a one-time line whose product has a selling plan. Carts that are already subscriptions never see the banner by design.

Does the upgrade discount apply to every renewal?

The discount you set is on the first subscription order. Ongoing pricing comes from the selling plan itself — set the plan's subscribe-and-save discount under Subscriptions → Selling plans.
