Frequently asked questions

Straight answers to the questions merchants actually ask — setup, pricing, retention, subscribers and data

Getting started

What do I need to do before subscriptions can sell?

Three things, tracked on the Sublyra admin Setup checklist: create a subscribe & save offer (a selling plan group attached to your products), add the Subscribe & Save widget block to your product pages, and place a test order. Nothing sells until all three are done — the page checks each one against your live store.

Do I need to edit my theme's code?

No. The setup checklist can place the widget block on your live theme in one click, just above Add to cart. On a vintage theme without JSON templates, automatic placement can't reach the product page — use "Open in theme editor" and add the block by hand. Either way, no code.

Can shoppers still buy one-time?

Yes. The widget offers both — shoppers toggle between the subscription and a one-time purchase. You control the frequencies and discounts on offer from the Selling plans page.

Can I try Sublyra with fake data before going live?

Yes. The Analytics page can load a fictional sample dataset so every screen is populated while you explore. It stays inside Sublyra — nothing is created in your Shopify store — an amber banner reminds you it's on, and one click removes it. See Analytics.

Plans & pricing

Is there really a free plan?

Yes. Launch is free up to 100 subscribers — no monthly fee. You pay 1.5% + 19¢ per subscription transaction, and the storefront basics (widget, portal, selling plans, core analytics) are all included.

What do the paid plans cost?

Starter is $29/mo (1.0% + 19¢, up to 500 subscribers — adds dunning, cancel flows, win-back, bundles and a 1:1 onboarding call). Growth is $79/mo (0.75%, up to 2,000 — adds loyalty, referrals, cohort analytics and API access). Plus is $199/mo (0.5%, unlimited — adds priority support with a 99.9% SLA and hands-on implementation). All paid plans have a 30-day free trial. Full comparison: Plans & billing.

Is there a discount for paying yearly?

Yes — yearly billing is 10 × the monthly price, so two months are free (about 17% off). Usage fees are the same on both cycles.

Do you take a cut of my regular (one-time) sales?

No. Usage fees apply to subscription transactions only, and they're capped monthly ($100–$2,000 depending on plan), so a great month never becomes a surprise bill.

What if I only need one premium feature?

Buy it as an add-on ($9.99–$19.99/mo) instead of upgrading — cancellation flows, smart retries & dunning, loyalty rewards, and API & webhooks are all sold individually. Add-ons already included in your plan are marked covered so you never pay twice.

Widget & selling plans

Can I change how the widget looks?

Yes — the Widget settings page has a live preview with device toggle, style presets (Classic, Minimal, Bold, Midnight, Sharp), and controls for headline, colors, layout and frequency style. Anything the style tab doesn't cover can be done with scoped custom CSS under Settings → Developer.

How many subscription frequencies can I offer?

Up to six plans per selling plan group, with custom names, intervals (days, weeks or months) and per-plan discounts. For large catalogs there's product search and CSV bulk-select on the Selling plans page.

What happens when a subscriber picks a subscription?

The widget injects the selling plan into the cart, hides "Buy it now" (they're committing to recurring, not a one-time checkout), and checkout shows the recurring total clearly — e.g. "$45.60 every month".

Retention & dunning

A subscriber's card was declined. Is that revenue gone?

Not usually. Smart retries give each decline reason its own retry rhythm — insufficient funds waits for payday, while an expired card needs the customer to update it first (they get a card-update email). Orders recovered this way show up as "Recovered" in Orders and as recovered revenue in Analytics. Starter plan and above.

Can I stop subscribers from cancelling?

You can't block cancellation — nor should you — but you can intercept it. Cancellation flows ask why they're leaving, then counter with the offer most likely to keep them: a discount for a price objection, a delay for "I have more than I need". Every attempt and its outcome is recorded either way, which is the churn data that matters.

Do win-back emails go to everyone who cancels?

Only to customers with marketing consent — that's enforced by the billing engine, not a UI checkbox. Transactional mail (order confirmations, card-update links) always sends regardless of consent.

What happens to a renewal when the product is out of stock?

Your call — skip the renewal, keep selling (oversell), or pause the subscription until you resume it. Stock is read live from Shopify at charge time, and you can get emailed when a renewal is skipped, paused or low-stock. See Inventory policy.

Subscribers & the portal

What can subscribers do themselves?

In the customer portal: skip the next order, pause or resume, reschedule, and go through the cancel flow. Every action is audit-logged, and the admin's portal preview lets you walk the exact same experience as any subscriber.

How do my other tools know who a subscriber is?

Through tags. Orders are stamped (first order, every order, and numbered renewals like "Recurring Order #3"), and customers carry a lifetime subscriber tag plus one mutually-exclusive status tag (active, paused, canceled, payment failure). See Tags & shipping.

Can I move my existing subscribers from another app?

Yes — the migration importer takes a CSV export from Subi, Appstle, ReCharge or any other app and generates a one-click re-activation link per subscriber. They confirm payment once and the subscription is recreated. See Migration.

Data, privacy & leaving

Where does my subscription data live?

Contracts are Shopify objects — they live in Shopify. Sublyra keeps a local mirror, kept current by webhooks, which powers the dashboards without hitting Shopify on every page load. Integration secrets (Klaviyo keys, Twilio tokens) are stored encrypted.

Do you handle GDPR requests?

Yes. Sublyra implements the three mandatory GDPR webhooks — data request, customer redact, shop redact — and the Data protection page lets you run the same export/redact actions by hand, review the access log, and manage marketing consent. Erasure anonymises rather than deletes, so your financial records stay intact.

What happens to my subscribers if I uninstall?

Your subscribers' contracts are Shopify objects and exist independently of the app — uninstalling cancels your Sublyra charges, but it doesn't cancel anyone's subscription. Migrate or wind down contracts before you remove the app if you're leaving subscriptions entirely.
